Woo! I just got the book from Amazon. SO cool that Sylvester has a book about him!

I just wish they had come up with a better cover design. I mean, one of the Most Glamourous Men EVER to walk the earth, and on the cover they put a picture of a SHOE?!?!? For crying out loud.

The shoe was a recreation of shoes hand decorated by Sylvester in 1970. You would have to have been there to fully appreciate the effort. The book is very factual and informative. Gamson did a first rate job.

Thanks for the info - that actually makes me feel a lot better about it. I just thought that maybe a glamorous picture of Sylvester would be in order - but good to know there was a thoughtful reason behind it.

I'm a big fan of Sylvester and it's important to me to see artists treated with respect. The book itself does seem to be very respectful, thorough and lovingly written so far (I am still in early chapters, he hasn't even moved to SF yet.)

        Thanks for starting this tribe!

Hi Mermaid ~~ Glad you are having fun here. If you are interested in Sylly, I have a sixty minute VHS of Sylvester live at Dreamland from 1982. Two costume changes, background vocals by Jeanie Tracy and a great Hot Band. A copy of this concert can be yours for the nominal sum of $20, including postage. If you are interested, drop me a line using my non-tribal email (go to my profile) and I will give you instructions. Have you read Sweet Pam's book "Midnight At The Palace"? It tells ALL! Happy reading.

There was also an exhibit in New York's Lincoln Center(library) about the theme of *DISCO*,very instructive and well done, incl.were photos and an outfit of the Fabulous Sylvester from his San Francisco period.

Remember at the gay pride party of 1980 in San Francisco when he was busy doing concerts in Europe he'd rented a plane to fly a banner over the party to say he was sorry he couldn't be there or something to that effect.Fabulously Flamboyant!
Only saw him twice, once dragged onto the (circular@ The Cowpalace)stage @ a Diana Ross concert to sing(and show off his incredible white fur)and at a disco in Hollywood dressed as a Roman,in a white mini-toga,strapped gold sandals and all.
It was also where Al Parker cruised me ,hahaha.I was married, thank gee.

I really enjoyed how Josh Gamson tells Sylvester's story through the people who knew him. The interviews bring him to life. What a rich oral history lives in this town...
